Overview
Carstensz Pyramid is an amazing climb and adventure taking us to one of the most remote regions on Earth. Located in West Papua, Indonesia, Mount Carstensz (also known as Puncak Jaya) was among the last areas in the world to be mapped. Deep within the jungles of Papua, some local tribes still live traditional lives, largely untouched by the modern world. As the highest peak in Oceania and one of the prestigious Seven Summits, the Carstensz Pyramid limestone massif rises dramatically out of a lush jungle. This is perhaps the most unique of the Seven Summits — the highest island peak in the world and the tallest point between the Himalayas and the Andes. Our journey begins in Bali, Indonesia. We fly to Timika in West Papua and take a helicopter directly to Yellow Valley and base camp. The standard route is a rock climb rated approximately 5.6 up the featured north face. Along the ridge you'll encounter the famous 'Sky Bridge' — a 60-foot gap crossed on three tight cables, one to walk on and two as handrails. The round trip from base camp takes about 8–10 hours. First summited in 1962 by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer — the same man who wrote 'Seven Years in Tibet'.
